PATIENTS RIGHTS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

PATIENT RIGHTS

Respect and Impartial Treatment

You have the right to:

  • Be treated with dignity and respect, regardless of your age, gender, nationality, religion, disability, socio-economic status, or mode of payment, provided the facility offers the required services and has the capacity to treat you. This right is reinforced by applicable national and international patient protection laws, such as the Consumer Protection Act, the Clinical Establishments Act, and relevant medical ethics guidelines established by regulatory authorities.

  • Receive care without discrimination, prejudice, or bias.

Privacy & Confidentiality

You have the right to:

  • Expect that your personal and medical information will be kept confidential, accessed only by authorized healthcare personnel.

  • Have your care discussions and consultations conducted discreetly and in a confidential manner.

  • Request the presence of a person of the same gender during physical examinations or treatments.

Safety & Consent

You have the right to:

  • Expect safe and effective medical care, including the implementation of appropriate infection control measures.

  • Be informed of the risks, benefits, and alternatives before consenting to any procedure, except in life-threatening emergencies where consent may not be possible.

  • Refuse treatment to the extent permitted by law and be informed of the medical consequences of your decision.

  • Have access to an interpreter if language is a barrier to communication.

Know Your Treating Team

You have the right to:

  • Be informed of the identity, role, and qualifications of the physician and other healthcare professionals involved in your care.

  • Seek clarification regarding the roles of different healthcare personnel attending to you.

Understanding Your Treatment

You have the right to:

  • Receive complete and updated information regarding your diagnosis, treatment plan, and expected prognosis in a language and manner you understand.

  • Participate in decisions regarding your care and treatment.

  • Be informed about any research projects you are invited to participate in and to refuse participation without affecting your standard of care.

Seeking a Second Opinion

You have the right to:

  • Seek a second opinion from another physician, either within or outside the facility, without requiring the consent of your current doctor.

Complaints Management & Billing

You have the right to:

  • Receive a clear and itemized bill detailing all services rendered.

  • Request an explanation of any billed charges.

  • File a complaint about any violation of your rights and be informed of the procedure for lodging complaints, as well as the resolution process. You have the right to do so without fear of retaliation or adverse consequences from the healthcare facility or its staff.

PATIENT RESPONSIBILITIES

Your Treatment & Compliance

You have a responsibility to:

  • Provide accurate and complete information regarding your medical history, medications, allergies, past surgeries, and current health conditions.

  • Keep your medical records and reports accessible to your treating physician.

  • Follow the treatment plan prescribed by your doctor and adhere to all medical instructions provided by healthcare personnel.

  • Inform your doctor promptly if you experience any difficulties in following the prescribed treatment or if your condition changes.

  • Keep track of your health progress and communicate any concerns to your treating team.

  • Attend scheduled medical appointments and inform your doctor in advance if you are unable to do so.

Respect for the Hospital and Other Individuals

You have a responsibility to:

  • Respect the rights, privacy, and dignity of other patients, visitors, and hospital staff.

  • Adhere to hospital rules and regulations, including infection control and safety measures.

  • Maintain the cleanliness of hospital premises and avoid causing damage to hospital property.

Your Financial Obligations

You have a responsibility to:

  • Understand and fulfill your financial obligations for medical care received, including providing accurate and updated insurance details, if applicable. If you have concerns about billing, you may request a review or clarification of charges. Financial assistance programs or alternative payment plans may be available for eligible patients, and you have the right to inquire about these options. In case of disputes, a formal resolution process is available to address billing concerns.

  • Make timely payments for healthcare services as agreed upon with the hospital.

Regarding Your Lifestyle

You have a responsibility to:

  • Acknowledge that your lifestyle choices (such as diet, exercise, and substance use) impact your health and overall well-being. Non-compliance with medical advice may limit the healthcare provider’s ability to achieve the best possible outcomes and could reduce the provider’s liability in cases where adverse health effects result from patient decisions.

  • Take preventive measures to maintain good health and seek medical guidance when necessary.

Please exercise your rights and responsibilities in a mature and positive manner. While the healthcare provider will strive to offer the best possible care, you are equally responsible for your health outcomes.
